Birney the Tram-cat is turning 4 on International Cat Day!
Did you know that Bendigo has trams? Birney joined the Bendigo Tramways team in 2014, he was a rescue cat who now calls the tram depot home. Birney was named after the Birney Tram – which Bendigo holds the largest collection in the world.
Birney’s job was to catch mice, but he has recently taken on the role of Tramways Superintendent. When Birney isn’t busy napping you will find him keeping an eye on the fleet of historic trams, greeting everyone who visits the workshop and posing for photographs. Birney’s iconic status was cemented when he had a children’s book published about him (by a visitor to the Depot) which is stocked in the Tramways Gift Shop. You will also find a range of other gifts featuring Birney in the shop as well. Birney leaves such an impression on visitors that he regularly receives postcards and presents in the mail. Birney loves to see photos of himself on social media, so make sure you tag @bendigotramways in your Facebook photos and use #BirneyBendigoTramCat.
